Job Purpose

 

 

To support the DTL/SD in ensuring that the computer systems and programs allocated to the jobholder under the Systems Development project plan are designed, completed and implemented to meet the company’s business requirements and I.T’s technical requirements within budget and to schedule.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • To develop the delegated computer systems, sub-systems or suites of programs to meet the company’s business requirements and I.T’s technical requirements within the agreed schedule, thereby providing a quality service to the department’s customers.
  • An IT Developer may be asked to delegate analysis and programming to other resources. In such cases, the IT Developer should ensure that these resources are effectively used and efficiently controlled.
  • To establish and maintain sound business relations with users of I.T services so that areas where I.T itself can assist business objectives are identified and user requirements are clearly understood.
  • To seek out ways and put forward ideas for improving productivity and creating business opportunities.
  • To design software adhering to department standards in order to meet specified requirements, keeping the DTL/SD informed as to the progress of their work.
  • To respond to help desk queries and identify those problems, which require immediate investigation, delegating where appropriate to an IT Developer or a Junior/Trainee IT Developer, to ensure minimal disruption to the business.
  • To establish and maintain appreciation of new technological and software developments for the benefit of the department and wider company.
  • To ensure that fair treatment of customers is integral to the operation of area of responsibility, and that effective education, analysis and monitoring takes place so that prompt action can be taken to ensure compliance.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Technical:

A broad experience in analysis, design, and programming, including exposure to business systems and processes. Knowledge of software development tools in use at Ageas is required.

 

Problem Solving/Analytical:

Ability to approach and solve problems in a logical manner with minimal guidance.

 

Initiative:

Proven ability to solve moderately complex queries with minimal input adhering to departmental procedures. Maintain a high awareness of industry issues and trends, particularly in regard to accessibility, usability and emerging technologies. Keep team members informed as appropriate, with a view to incorporating these in future projects and staying ahead of the market.

 

Communication:

Effective communicator both verbally and in writing, exhibiting good questioning and listening skills in order to identify customer requirements, whilst informing staff of progress and results by use of meetings and presentations.

 

Results Orientation:

Good organisational skills in order to control and schedule the workload and successfully meet deadlines. Excellent analytical skills, the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, willingness to put extra effort in to meet business critical deadlines.

Demonstrates the ability to work as a part of a team and foster good working relationships internally and externally. Demonstrates timely and open communication and is diplomatic when dealing with others. Experience of being able to work as part of a small team delivering to schedule and budget, and on occasions delegating work as appropriate.

 

 

Key Technical Skills

 

  • Java
  • Frameworks:- Spring, Multi-threading
  • Web Services, RESTful/SOAP
  • Expertise in XML, JSON
  • Experience of configuring Apache Tomcat webservers
  • Exposure to software management tools GIT, Git Hub or Subversion.
  • Experience in testing tools, JUnit, Mockito and exposure to Gradle

 

Desirable skills

  • Groovy, Grails
  • HTML, CSS or CSS3, Bootstrap,
  • Javascript (ES2015 and newer)
  • Client side frameworks (e.g. React/Redux)
  • Client side development tooling (eg Browserify, Webpack)
  • Understand web standards and build for accessibility
  • Exposure to software management tools GIT, Git Hub, SVN or TFS or equivalent
  • Solid UI development skills including responsive design (Optional)
  • Node.js application framework experience
